Why stronger business lending is not a simple green light for SMEs

Fresh bank results and RBA data point to credit still flowing, but repayment risk remains uneven

Westpac’s latest full-year result has added a useful signal for Australian business borrowers: credit demand remains strong even as interest rates and operating costs keep pressure on cash flow.
The bank reported on 2 November 2026 that its overall lending grew over the year, with business lending rising more quickly than many household-facing categories, reinforcing the sense that firms are still using finance to invest, refinance and manage working capital.

The result sits alongside the Reserve Bank of Australia’s September financial aggregates, released on 30 October, which showed business credit growing faster over the year than housing or personal credit. That does not mean every small or medium-sized enterprise is finding finance easy to obtain. It does suggest that lenders are still active in business markets, particularly where borrowers can show reliable revenue, clear records and a realistic repayment path.

For SMEs, the practical message is mixed. More lending activity can mean more choice and stronger competition between banks, non-banks and specialist lenders. It may also reflect genuine investment by businesses that need equipment, stock, vehicles, premises or technology to remain productive. At the same time, a larger debt commitment taken on in a high-rate environment can quickly become uncomfortable if margins narrow, invoices are delayed or customer demand weakens.

The RBA’s October Financial Stability Review made a similar distinction. It noted that business lending competition and process improvements have helped some firms access credit, while also highlighting that smaller businesses and firms in transport, hospitality and construction can be more exposed to cost pressures. Those sectors often have thinner buffers, variable income and less room to pass higher input costs on to customers.

Before taking on or restructuring debt, business owners may wish to compare the purpose of the funding with the likely repayment source. Finance used to support revenue-producing assets can have a different risk profile from debt used mainly to plug recurring cash flow gaps. Understanding different business finance options can also help clarify whether a term loan, line of credit, equipment finance or invoice-related facility better matches the timing of income and expenses.

Westpac also pointed to interest rates remaining elevated into 2027, which is an important planning assumption rather than a certainty. For borrowers, the safer approach is to test repayments against today’s costs and a buffer, not only against hoped-for rate cuts. The strongest finance decisions in this environment are likely to be those backed by conservative forecasts, clean financial information and a clear reason for borrowing.
