Australia’s electric vehicle market is no longer moving in one straight line.
After the sharp lift in battery electric sales earlier this year, the latest market updates suggest buyers are still interested in EVs, but demand is becoming more selective.
Model availability, price cuts, new entrants, delivery timing and household budget pressure are all influencing which cars gain momentum from month to month.

That is an important shift for anyone planning an EV purchase. When sales growth is concentrated around a few highly promoted models, it can be tempting to treat the headline vehicle as the safest finance choice. But a broader, more competitive market changes the equation. A car that looks like the obvious pick today may face stronger resale pressure if similar models arrive at lower prices, with longer range or better standard equipment.

This is an extension of the trend we flagged when June sales jumped. The key message has not changed: more EV activity is positive for buyers, but it also makes the finance decision more layered. The purchase price is only the starting point. Buyers also need to consider loan term, deposit size, interest rate, balloon structure, charging costs, insurance, servicing and likely resale value.

There are several practical takeaways for households comparing a new or used EV:

  • Do not assume a lower sticker price automatically means the cheapest total ownership cost.
  • Check whether drive-away offers include on-road costs, dealer delivery and any required accessories.
  • Compare repayments over more than one loan term, especially if choosing a balloon payment.
  • Think about how quickly the model segment is changing before stretching the loan term too far.
  • For used EVs, review battery warranty, service history and remaining manufacturer cover before applying.

For finance planning, the biggest risk is focusing only on the monthly repayment that fits today’s budget. If a buyer chooses a long term to make an expensive EV feel affordable, they may pay more interest and could owe more than expected if resale values soften. Using an EV loan calculator to test different deposits, rates and balloon settings can help reveal the real trade-offs before a loan application is submitted.

The current market is good news for informed buyers. More brands competing for attention can mean sharper deals, better specifications and more choice across city cars, SUVs and used vehicles. But the finance side needs the same level of comparison as the vehicle itself. In a market where monthly sales leaders can change quickly, the strongest decision is usually the one based on affordability, total cost and flexibility, not showroom momentum alone.

Fresh home loan rate reporting suggests competition for quality borrowers remains active, even while many existing mortgage holders continue to feel the weight of elevated repayments. The key issue is not simply whether rates are high or low. It is whether lenders are reserving their sharpest pricing for new customers, refinancers and borrowers with strong equity positions, rather than automatically passing similar value to long-term customers. - read more

Car Loan Competition Is Still There, But So Are the Traps

Late-August car loan market reporting suggests Australian borrowers are still seeing pockets of sharp competition, particularly for newer vehicles and applicants with strong credit profiles. That is encouraging for households and small business owners who delayed a purchase during the winter, but it should not be read as a blanket sign that all finance has become cheaper or easier to secure. - read more
