Loan Complaints Put Borrower Treatment Back Under the Microscope

Why affordability, hardship responses and clear communication matter before you borrow

Fresh financial complaints data has kept Australia’s lending sector under pressure, with consumer credit issues remaining a major concern for households already dealing with higher everyday costs.
While the figures cover a broad range of products, the message for borrowers is clear: the way a lender assesses, explains and manages a loan can matter just as much as the advertised rate.

For Australians who have been declined by a bank, have limited credit history or are comparing no credit check loans, this is especially important. A faster application process can be helpful when money is tight, but speed should not replace clear checks on affordability, fees, repayment timing and what happens if circumstances change. A loan that looks convenient at the start can become stressful if repayments do not line up with income or if hardship support is hard to access.

The latest complaints focus also extends an earlier market theme: lenders are being judged not only on whether they approve credit, but on how they treat customers after the contract begins. That includes explaining costs in plain language, responding quickly when a borrower flags financial difficulty, and avoiding repayment arrangements that simply push the problem further down the road.

For borrowers, the practical takeaway is to slow down long enough to ask the right questions. Before applying, check the total amount repayable, not just the amount advanced. Look at establishment fees, ongoing charges, missed payment costs, direct debit timing and whether the loan is secured against an asset. If income is irregular because of casual work, contracting or self-employment, it is also worth checking whether the repayment schedule can realistically survive quieter weeks.

Borrowers should also remember that responsible lending still matters, even where a provider places less emphasis on a traditional credit score. A lender may use bank statements, income patterns, expenses or business cash flow to decide whether the loan is suitable. That assessment should protect both sides: the lender from avoidable default risk, and the borrower from taking on debt they cannot manage.

A simple safeguard is to model repayments under more than one scenario before committing. If the repayment only works under the most optimistic assumptions, the loan may be too tight. If it still fits after allowing for rent, groceries, utilities and existing debts, the decision is likely to be more informed.

The broader complaints trend is a reminder that access to finance and borrower protection should move together. For people under pressure, the best outcome is not just getting approved quickly, but getting finance that is transparent, affordable and supported if life changes.
